15 Apr 2008 - Whitletts match report
Stagecoach West of Scotland League Ayrshire District League
Tuesday 15th April 2008
Ardrossan Winton Rovers 2 Whitletts Victoria 0
Winton welcomed back keeper Stevie O’Neill, out due to long term work commitments, to face league leaders Whitletts, for the first of a number of games which Winton, wanting to improve their league position, would have a major say to who would clinch the District League title.
Winton face second place Girvan on Monday evening and are still to face chasing Hulford and Dalry.
Winton showed their intent in the 10th minute when the unmarked Easton met Frye’s free kick at the back post, but fell to his wrong foot and he sclaffed the chance back across goal.
Good work outside the Whitletts box, Frye passed into McAvoy on the quarter hour and "Biscuit's"
crossed well into Milliken but he shot weakly into keepers arms.
But Rovers took the lead ten minutes later, a 1- 2 between Gallagher and Adams on the edge of the
box saw Gallagher pass wide of penalty and Graeme Paterson took the pass on and fire his low shot
strongly past Wilson into the opposite corner of the net.
Muir picked up a yellow card just before half time for a late tackle.
Billy Easton then joined Muir in the referees book on 53mins for a clumsy tackle on Nimmo.
Both managers made changes in the 58th minute as Paton replaced Patterson and former Winton
player Sean Quinn came on for Vics and both players were in the wars minutes later when both rose to met the ball and clashed heads. Minutes later Paton had to be replaced by Shanks after his eye was starting to close after the head knock.
But Winton made sure of the points with a tremendous goal in the76th min John Gallagher held up the ball well on the edge of the Whitletts penalty box he turned and slid a pass inside the right back
where Keir Milliken had broke forward from left back to take a touch before firing an unstoppable shot past Wilson for Winton’s second.
Another poor tackle a minute later saw Billy Easton pick up his second yellow and he saw red from Referee Brawls. But this did not deter Winton when McAvoy broke down the right wing past Ryland and a perfect cross was met by Milliken’s header from 10 yards out but a stunning save from Wilson
denied the Winton man his second goal of the game.
Whitletts couldn’t pressure the 10 man Rovers side and the game finished in a flare up when Winton’s
sub Gary Davidson was late in a challenge with namesake James Davidson which saw the Rovers man receive the yellow card, but the Whitletts defender had to much to say to the referee and he saw
red so both sides finished the game with 10 men.
