Girvan gained 3 valuable points in this league fixture between the clubs but they had to work really hard for it against a determined Rovers side but it was the visitors who took the game to Winton in the early part of the game which saw Michael Moffat cross in from the left to Scotland Junior player Darren Mitchell and he held the ball up well before knocking the ball to Kevin Biggart whose shot forced a decent save from O’Neill. Another chance for the Seasiders came in 15 minutes when a mistake by Paton allowed Moffat in on goal but under the challenge of Brown his effort was tipped onto the bar by the Winton keeper and out for a corner. Girvan continued to be the stronger side at this stage and the opening goal came in 18 minutes when youngster David McVittie ran at pace at the Winton defence carving them open before slotting a the ball past O’Neill for a tremendous individual effort. Winton re – structured after this and Girvan’s dominance began to wane with only a Kriss Mitchell effort on 33 minutes of note. A corner for the Winton on 35 minutes saw the ball knocked to Shanks who in turn placed it back to Muir who got space to hit a right foot drive that looked a goal all the way but former Rovers’ keeper Stuart Robertson denied him tipping the ball past the post. Winton’s started the second half as they finished the first pushing the Girvan side back and Colin Frye on 51 minutes, saw him be denied by Robertson saving at his feet. Girvan’s Scott McGilp put a dangerous cross into Mitchell on 54 minutes and the striker controlled it well before firing a shot high over the bar. Winton got a deserved equalised on the hour mark when McAvoy got free on the right and sent in a teasing cross for the keeper but John Gallagher nipped in first to head the ball over him and into the net. On 65 minutes David Wilson got on the end of a good cross by Paton but he was denied again by Robertson. Girvan went ahead on 76 minutes when Darren Mitchell got on the end of a cross from the right and nipped in to the box before crashing a shot high past O’Neill. Winton pressed the Girvan side after this but the visitors held out for three valuable points in their promotion quest.
