Winton Rovers won this end of season game comfortably enough
against a much improved Darvel side who only really threatened late in the
game. The opening exchanges did not see
much football being played as both sides tested each other. It took 6 minutes
before a decent move saw Shanks knock a good ball over the Darvel back four but
Muir’s effort was deflected for a corner. Shanks got on the end of the corner but
Davis saved his effort. Another effort for the Rovers on 12 minutes
saw John Gallagher’s shot fly over the bar and a minute after this he picked
the ball up on the half way line and ran right through the Darvel defence but
the only thing missing from this great piece of skill was the finish as the
ball was skewed wide of the post. The Rovers kept pressing and on 16 minutes a
good move on the left saw Scott Adam flick the ball over the head of
Dallas who promptly took
the legs from him inside the box for an easy penalty decision for the
referee. Graham Muir stepped up and
promptly dispatched the ball past
Davis
to give the hosts the lead.
Dallas, despite conceding
the penalty almost made up for this when he shot just wide of the target on 31
minutes. David Wilson past up a good
chance for the Rovers to extend their lead when a corner on the right was
flighted in but his effort lacked power to really trouble the keeper.
Wilson again
proved to be a useful striker and on 41 minutes he appeared on the inside left
channel to fire in a low strike that
Davis
saved well at his near post. Darvel were
not out of the game and George Kelly saw a header just before half time well
saved at the near post by Winton’s Colin Robertson.
Dallas had a good chance to equalise early in
the second half when his pace saw him go past Brown but his shot was wide of
the far post. With 61 minutes played, Darvel again went close when Kelly saw a
shot towards the back post tipped round the post by Robertson. Darvel were trying everything to get back on
level terms and a long throw in by Paul saw the ball eventually go out for a
bye kick causing the home defence some trouble on the way. Winton went further ahead on 71 minutes when
a Mark McCann cross went behind the Darvel defence but John Gallagher was quick
minded enough to nip in and stab the ball past the Darvel keeper. Ryan Drummond pulled off a decent effort on
goal after this but Robertson saved well. On 79 minutes Winton went 3 – 0 up and it was down to a ball from Graeme
Patterson flicked on to Gary Davidson who controlled the ball and then showed
good composure to stroke the ball past the Darvel keeper for his first goal for
Winton. Darvel kept working hard and
were desperate to gain a consolation and Dallas almost set up Kelly with a
couple of minutes to go and in injury time a long ball over the top saw Colin
Robertson on top of his game deny a point blank effort from Dallas.
