Winton pulled off their biggest win of the season against a struggling Muirkirk side but if the visitors had a bit more luck then this game may have turned out a bit differently as they hit the post three times during the game.

The Ardrossan side got off to a great start with a goal in 2 minutes from Gary Davidson who latched onto a cut back from McAvoy to side foot the ball high into the net. Winton continued to push and Davidson again got on the end of cut back on 5 minutes but he hooked the ball past the post.  Muirkirk’s Jim McCluskey saw his angled drive on 6 minutes come off the far post and a couple minutes after that Brian Wright was set up by Galbraith but O’Neill tipped his rising shot over the bar for a corner.

Winton extended their lead on 9 minutes when Milliken got free on the left and he measured a left foot shot that Menzies parried but McAvoy came steaming in to tap the loose ball home. David Wilson came in on the burst to test Menzies who managed to knock the ball wide but Wilson could deliver a telling cross.  Winton were playing some decent stuff at this stage and McAvoy got free again on the right to set up Frye who hit the ball straight at Menzies who parried the ball high into the air before making the recovery.  Winton were guilty of being a bit lax at the back and on 20 minutes a free kick deep into the Rovers box saw Martin King rise unchallenged but saw his header come off the post.

Winton ran up the park after this and McAvoy set up Frye again but this time Menzies pulled off a brilliant full length dive to deny him.  The third goal was not long in coming and a short corner on the right saw Patterson and McAvoy combine only to see McAvoy’s cross to the back post met by the head of Paul Brown who scored easily enough.  A minute before half time Winton won a penalty when Patterson had the legs taken from him by the keeper.  Patterson stepped up to take the kick and he wrong footed the keeper to score giving Winton a 4-0 lead at the interval.

The exciting football of the first half continued early in the second half and a good ball in by Frye to McAvoy on 51 minutes saw the Winton striker turn and shoot in one movement from the edge of the box to make it 5 – 0. Brian Wright was probably the most dangerous player for ‘Kirk and on 57 minutes he forced a decent save from O’Neill and two minutes after this Wright hit an absolute screamer of a shot from 25 yards to give the visitors bizarrely enough playing in Winton colours, a consolation.

The game went pretty flat after this with the final pass missing with the Ardrossan’s side approach play.  On 81 minutes Shanks passed up a glaring chance when he headed the ball wide from a Milliken  cross. Muirkirk almost got another goal back when Hill and Connelly managed to round O’Neill but between them all Connelly could do was stab the ball towards the goal where the ball came off the cross bar and away to safety.

The final goal of the game came with 5 minutes to play and it was a result of a long high ball in by Milliken which keeper Menzies mis – judged and the loose ball fell to Paul Monan who slotted the ball home.
