2 Jun 2008 - Winton back into the N A Cup final

North Ayrshire Cup Semi Final                         Monday 2nd June 2008

Saltcoats Victoria 0 - 4 Ardrossan Winton Rovers

Winton marched into their second consecutive North Ayrshire Cup final with a comfortable win over their near neighbours.  Saltcoats started brightly enough but it was Winton who took the lead after 8 minutes when Gallagher collected a pass and although there were claims for handball, he held the ball well before threading it to Millken and he got to the bye line before crossing to McAvoy and he turned his marker before scoring in the corner. After 11 minutes it was 2 – 0 courtesy of a penalty which was awarded after Thompson fouled Scott Adam in the box. Graeme Patterson scored putting the ball low to Markey’s left but the young keeper almost kept him out.  Winton sat back a bit after this and allowed Saltcoats onto them but the Winton keeper wasn’t kept that busy and it was Patterson who passed up a good chance after 40 minutes but Markey saved with his legs. A controversial incident just before half time left the Seasiders feeling a touch aggrieved when Latta’s strike from distance was fumbled and some thought the ball may have crossed the line but the referee didn’t give it and Winton went in at the interval still 2 – 0 up.

The game was pretty flat and although there were a few yellow cards shown Paul Timmons turned a hit a low shot into O’Neill’s arms on 70 minutes.  Winton got their second penalty in 72 minutes when McAvoy was sent clear on the left and as he cut back in Gillon took the legs from him.  Colin Frye took the penalty scoring in decisive fashion with a well taken effort. Wilson saw a spectacular effort from distance come off the bar as Winton tried to seal the game but the fourth came when Milliken was sent free on the left before setting up McAvoy who went round the keeper to score. O’Neill pulled off a decent save from Lee Duncan in the dying minutes as Saltcoats tried to get a consolation but the final chance of the game saw Paul Monan get free on the right but Markey blocked his effort to deny the Winton man.
