Winton were brought back to earth by their higher league opponents after the Rovers had chalked up a 10 – 1 thumping of Neilston Under 21’s on Thursday night.  The Rovers took the game to the Port early on but Scott Nugent scored the first goal on 10 minutes when he met a cross on the right to tuck the ball through the legs of Darren Stewart in the Winton goal.  The Ardrossan side fought back and a good curling cross on 20 minutes from Jamie Paton saw McAvoy get on the end of it but the ball went over the bar.  Winton equalised on 25 minutes when the Rovers’ trialist striker sent in a good low cross which was met by McAvoy who tucked the ball home from 6 yards. The Winton new man burst through the Port defence on the half hour mark and forced a good block by the keeper but Muir couldn’t supply the finish with the follow up. On 32 minutes David Wilson played a good one two at the edge of the box but again the finish was lacking.  Winton were dominant at this stage and McAvoy set up the trialist striker but was denied by a miraculous block on the Port goal line to force a corner.  The Undertakers were living a charmed life at this stage and from a corner on 37 minutes the keeper tipped a Paul Brown header over the bar.  The Port passed up a chance on 43 minutes when Lee Coyle curled in a dangerous cross that was missed by everyone but a slight touch could have resulted in a goal.  Port Glasgow rang the changes at half time and began to get more possession as Winton seemed to miss place the passing and wilt under the heat.  The only real chance fell to Graeme Patterson but his effort flew high and wide.  The Port began to press moving into the last 15 minutes, and a turn and shot flew wide followed by a good stop by Stewart from a curling shot from the right.  The Undertakers began to be dominant going into the latter stages as the exertions of Winton’s Thursday night game began to take their toll especially as the Port kept ringing the changes and it wasn’t long before the visitors scored when a long cross from the right fell to James Best who cut in and hit a good low early drive across the goal and into the far corner of the net.
