21 Jul 2007 - Pre season loss to the Port

Winton lost their first pre- season friendly against Port Glasgow by 3 - 2 in what proved, for the neutral at least, a game that had almost everything. 5 goals, 2 penalties and 4 red cards in what proved to be an entertaining afternoon for those who took the trouble to venture to Winton Park

Port Glasgow forced a good save out of Stevie O'Neill on 10 minutes but Raymond Montgomerie forced a good save from the Port 'keeper when his dipping volley was saved on 13 minutes. Montgomerie was looking lively and he put a good cross in for Alistair Patrick on 25 minutes who just failed to get enough on the header to trouble the keeper. Winton did go ahead on 33 minutes when a free kick on the right was flicked on and Patrick got in at the back post to strike. Graham Muir had a good run and shot on 35 minutes but his effort went high and wide. O'Neill showed his class just before half time stopping a first time effort from a corner on the right. Port Glasgow got back into the game on 51 minutes when a sliced clearance was picked up by the Port attack and they ran in to curl a shot past O'Neill. Winton won a penalty on 61 minutes when Davie Wilson was felled in the box. Davie Wilson took the spot kick but the Port Glasgow keeper parried his shot then Wilson managed to hook the rebound past the post.
Port Glasgow went ahead in controverisal circumstances on 74 minutes when a free kick was curled in from the right but a Port striker in an offside position ran across the field of view of O'Neill and got a slight deflection to put the ball past the despairing dive. Port went further ahead on 81 minutes when a break on the right saw an early shot catch O'Neill on the wrong foot and the ball went in at the near post. Winton got a goal back on 84 minutes when Jamie Paton was tripped and Paton himself scored with the penalty but the game seemed to boil over as Port suffered 3 red cards when their left back and a substitute were ordered off along with ex Scotland midfielder and Port manager David Hopkin whilst Winton's Davie Wilson received a second yellow just before the end of the game.
