5 Aug 2007 - Final preseason game report
Pre season friendly 4th August 2007
Ardrossan Winton Rovers 4 - 0 Renfrew
Winton finished off their preseason games with a resounding victory over Renfrew. The fans that did turn up saw a mightily impressive performance from the Rovers who ran their higher league opponents ragged. It also proved to be a good afternoon for Stephen McAvoy who marked his return to Winton Park after a short absence with two well taken goals in the first half.
After a lively start, Winton went on the offensive in 12 minutes and Brian Wallace fired in a good shot that the 'Frew keeper parried and recovered just in time as Raymond Montgomerie was set to pounce. A minute later Keir Milliken broke and fed Scott Adam who fended off a couple of challenges to pass inside to McAvoy who tucked the ball below the advancing 'Frew keeper. Renfrew came back after this and on 19 minutes a free kick was tipped onto the bar by O'Neill and the ball went out for a corner. Winton were playing some good stuff and a move on the right saw Graham Muir get free and cut the ball back to David Wilson who side footed the ball wide. Winton went 2 nil up on 26 minutes when Wilson did really well down the right and after beating a couple of the 'Frew defenders he slid the ball in to McAvoy who stroked the ball past the keeper. Winton continued to be dominant and on 58 minutes went 3 - 0 up and it was down to some strong running by Milliken who latched onto a flick on and ran in from the left with the ball, drew the keeper and fired a smashing left foot shot high into the net. Winton extended their lead on 69 minutes when a never say die run by Allan Weaver saw him chase what most thought was a lost cause but the tenacious midfielder slid in and won the ball on the bye line. Weaver then skipped past a couple of challenges and then passed the ball inside to Alistair Patrick who in turn cut inside and fired an unstoppable shot high into the net. Winton were rarely troubled by Renfrew for large parts of the game but a chance for them to get a consolation saw a cross ball from the left saw a diving header miss the target when it looked easier to score. Just on the final the final whistle, Winton almost went nap when a move on the left involving Quinn, Milliken and Patrick saw Quinn get in on goal but his chip went just over the bar.
