11 Aug 2007 - First points of the sectional league cup
Ardagh Cup section 1 11th August 2007
Ardrossan Winton Rovers 3 - 1 Dalry Thistle
Winton got their first 3 points in the Ardagh Cup section but it was far from a vintage performance from either side. Winton took the initiative on 6 minutes when a good break from defence by Milliken saw him play in Scott Adam who in turn laid the ball of for Stephen McAvoy but his shot was wide of the mark. After 15 minutes Winton lived a bit dangerously when Shaun Allen forced a save from Stevie O'Neill and from the parry the ball was crossed again in from the right and this time O'Neill got enough on the ball to take it away from McNally who was ready to pounce. The opening goal came on 21 minutes when a corner on the right fell to Adam who hooked the ball past former Winton stopper Neil Greenwood. Dalry rallied after this and took the game to their hosts and on 37 minutes it was all square when McNally got free on the right and cut the ball back to Steven Cripps who had the easiest of tasks to tuck the ball home from 6 yards out. Into the second half, Winton were not at the races as Dalry forced the game but despite their possession O'Neill only had to look lively on 50 minutes to punch an effort over the bar. Despite starting the second half without looking too clever the Rovers started to play a bit better from the hour mark and a melee in the box saw a couple of ricochets blocked by a resolute Dalry defence. Billy Easton got on the end of a good cross from Allan Weaver on 65 minutes but Greenwood held the effort. Winton did go ahead on 67 minutes when a free kick on the right was floated in and whilst Easton looked to be fouled David Wilson followed up and hit and unstoppable drive high into the net to give the Winton the lead. Winton were pressing more now and on 80 minutes Scott Adam hit a low drive which on the skiddy surface Greenwood did well to hold. Winton sealed the game when Allan Weaver picked the ball up on the right side and drove straight at the Dalry defence cutting them open and cut a nice low ball across the 6 yard box for Davie Wilson to get his second and Winton's third. Dalry were looking for a consolation and O'Mally came closest on 88 minutes when put through but he drove his shot wide.
