15 Aug 2007 - Defeat at home to Beith
Ardagh Cup section 1 Wed 15th August 2007
Ardrossan Winton Rovers 0 - 1 Beith Juniors
Winton came out of this Ardagh cup tie with great credit as they almost held their neighbours but it was Beith who got the vital three points in their quest to reach the quarter finals. It was also a sad day for the Rovers as captain for the game, Allan Weaver, played his last game before his departure to the USA to undertake a sports scholarship.
Beith were the first to threaten in 2 minutes and they really should have taken the lead when Andrew Reid beat the offside trap and saw his chip over O'Neill come off the post and back into the arms of O'Neill. McAvoy got a shot in at John Wight on 4 minutes but the Beith keeper stopped his shot and then prevented Montgomerie who was following up get on the scoreline. Reid again got round the back of the Rovers defence on 15 minutes but his effort was no trouble for O'Neill. Wight had a real let off on 25 minutes when he was dispossessed in the box and the ball eventually allowed Scott Adam to get a shot in on target but this was cleared off the line before Beith eventually cleared. McGarvey forced a good save from O'Neill on the half hour mark but there wasn't much to choose between the two sides at this stage. Craig Palmer fired in a long distance drive early in the second half and then on 52 minutes Steven Jack curled a shot in that O'Neill blocked then got down quickly to deny the in coming Roger. Beith were beginning to press a bit more at the start of the second half. The winning goal came on 73 minutes when a good run and shot across the goal from sub John Craig saw the ball forced into the net at the back post by John Spence. As the game petered out the ref saw fit to dish out a few yellow cards and just as the game was almost over Alan Shanks got on the end of his own knock down but blasted a left foot shot over the bar. The Rovers had a couple of efforts towards the end and a lightning breakaway saw Montgomerie thread a pass to Muir but he drove past the far post.
