18 Aug 2007 - Buffs revenge

Ardagh Cup section 1 Sat 18th August 2007

Kilwinning Rangers 6 - 2 Ardrossan Winton Rovers

Buffs got their revenge on Winton after their last meeting in the North Ayrshire Cup final but Winton were handicapped by inspirational keeper Stevie O'Neill being unavailable for the game.
Kilwinning Rangers got off to the best possible start and exploited the weakness in the Winton back line in 6 minutes when Nikki Smith crossed which caused havoc in the Winton defence and eventually the ball came off a Winton defender for an own goal. Winton rallied and Alan Shanks was set up by Scott Adam on 8 minutes and he tried to place his shot but Keith Ross saved and Quinn was unable to capitalise on the loose ball. Buffs went 2 - 0 up in 16 minutes when Stuart Wilson forced the ball home after a breakaway saw the ball go down the right get crossed back in and Wilson was there to finish. Buffs got a 'goal' chalked off which Rod Lennox shortly after this when Smith getting plenty of time on the right put a cross in which Lennox finished with a header in off the near post but was adjudged to be offside. Brian Johnston hit the crossbar when his header following a cross from the right was just too high. Winton rang the changes which was understandable but they were missing the calming influence of their regular number 1 and Connelly came off to be replaced by Milliken. Johnston did get a goal on 29 minutes when a mistake by Steven Savage saw the Buffs striker capitalise and he rolled the ball into the empty net. Lennox was out of luck as he latched onto a quick free kick but shot wide on 34 minutes. Winton had a chance to reduce the deficit just before half time when a cross ball on the right was headed back across the goal by Shanks and Muir managed to blast the ball from inside the 6 yard box. Winton regrouped at half time and Savage pulled off a decent save from the head of Gavin Orr. Winton still had chances and Scott Adam had a chance on 50 minutes but Buffs got their fourth goal in 55 minutes when George Wallace put in a cross cum shot that deceived Savage and the ball went in at the far post. Winton got a goal back in 71 minutes when a ball from Milliken was put through by Shanks to McAvoy and he ran on, drew Keith Ross and stroked the ball past him to score. George Wallace made it 5 - 1 on 77 minutes when a free kick was laid off to him and he drilled a low shot through the wall and into the bottom corner. Savage pulled off a good stop on 80 minutes when Darren Docherty tried to chip him but he touched the ball over. Sean Quinn got Winton another goal back on 81 minutes when a lovely ball from Alistair Patrick opened up the Buffs defence and Quinn showed good skill to run on and chip Ross from the edge of the box. Stephen Reid made it 6 - 2 when a long ball over the top by Ross fell to the Buffs sub striker and he ran on and slotted the ball through the legs of Savage to complete the scoring in an entertaining game played in the worst of conditions.
