2 Sep 2007 - Opening day draw v the Wee Vics

Stagecoach Ayrshire League Sat 1st September 2007

Ardrossan Winton Rovers 1 - 1 Irvine Victoria

Winton ended up with only a point from their opening league game in a match that could had seen them 3 - 1 down and out but in the end they will rue their missed opportunities to get the three points.
The Rovers started off reasonably well but Stephen McAvoy's effort at the near post in the first minute was held by McCue. Scott Hayes got the opening goal in 5 minutes when a corner on the left wasn't properly cleared and Hayes popped up in the 6 yard box to head the ball home. Winton weren't playing terribly well in the opening period but on 21 minutes Scott Adam equalised when he poked the ball past McCue following Irvine Vics inability to clear from a corner. 4 minutes after this David Menelaws met a great cross from the right over the bar when it looked easier to score. Graham Muir had been threatening to score in previous games and got a smart dipping volley on target on 29 minutes but McCue saved. Menelaws passed up another gilt edged chance on 34 minutes when Collins put a cross in at the back post but the former Buffs man headed wide from 6 yards out. The Rovers were eventually stung into action after this and began to push the Vics back going into half time with Jamie Paton beginning to get space on the right to cause the Vics defence some problems. The second half saw Paton again went on a lung bursting run on 57 minutes getting past two players but when he got to the bye line McCue cut out his cross. Winton passed up a great chance to take the lead on 61 minutes when Milliken rode a couple of tackles as he charged towards the Vics' goal but sent his shot past the far post. Winton were not getting much joy and on 67 minutes Muir was set up by Alistair Patrick but what was becoming a familiar pattern saw his effort safely held by McCue. Milliken also got another shot on target on 69 minutes but again was held by McCue. Probably the best chance for Winton to go ahead came on 72 minutes when McAvoy picked the ball up on the left wing and ran at the Vics' defence before firing in a shot that cannoned off the post before the ball was cleared. The ball was then crossed back in to the back post and Muir couldn't get his effort on target. Vics' got an effort on goal on 75 minutes when Darryl Boyd hit a dipping volley from distance but the ball looped over the bar. Vics' were breaking well and following a foul by Wilson a free kick from Boyd was sent over the bar. Patrick missed a great chance near the end to give the Rovers the three points but he knocked his effort just wide and the final action of the game saw the home side reduced to 10 men when Wilson got his second yellow card but it was too late to have any impact on the game.
