8 Sep 2007 - Defeat at Girvan

Stagecoach Ayrshire League Sat 8th September 2007

Girvan FC 3 - 0 Ardrossan Winton Rovers

Winton now have mountain to climb if they wish to harbour any thoughts of promotion after this latest set back at Girvan but the main talking point of the game was the yellow and red card count which spoilt what was a decent game. The Rovers got off to a bad start losing a goal in 90 seconds when a ball over the top of the Winton defence saw Darren Mitchell outpace Winton's Brian Wallace and run in on goal to stroke the ball past Stevie O'Neill. Winton tried to get back into the game and a free kick from McCann saw a dangerous ball fly across the 6 yard box but no Winton player took the chance to attack the ball and the ball went harmlessly wide. Mitchell was a major threat for Girvan but Winton made a couple of positional changes to stiffen up their defence and the Girvan centre's threat was better contained thereafter. Winton had a chance on 24 minutes when Milliken got one on one with former Rovers' keeper Stuart Robertson and from this challenge the loose ball came to Scott Adam but his effort was cleared off the line by McIlwraith. Winton were looking possibly the better side at this stage but on 32 minutes Michael Moffat ran on to a through ball down the right channel and placed his shot low past O'Neill to give the Seasiders a 2- 0 lead. The Hamilton Park surface was probably in need of a good haircut and Girvan used the long grass by putting the ball into space for their forwards to run onto which caused some problems for the Winton defence. A free kick from Kevin Biggart on 39 minutes saw a good header by Mitchell saved equally well by O'Neill. Winton had a claim for a hand ball early in the second half but things weren't going their way in this game and on 55minutes Moffat could have sealed the game but he tried the spectacular and shot over the bar. Winton then found themselves down to 10 men when Mark McCann was red carded for kicking out after he was fouled on 58 minutes. Winton's luck wasn't in and was typified when McAvoy got in good position but his shot was blocked by Ian Blair. The game was beginning to descend into Noel Coward territory when Girvan's O'Donnell saw red for a second yellow and Winton's Sean Quinn saw yellow for taking a free kick slightly distant from the locus of the offence. Back to the football and Mitchell had a chance to seal it on 75 minutes but although the Rovers gave him space he could only hit a shot tamely into the arms of O'Neill. A corner for the Winton saw them come the closest to scoring on 78 minutes when it was knocked back by Adam and Quinn fired in a drive that was deflected over the Girvan bar. As the game was stretched former Winton favourite Scott Clelland had a chance with a few minutes left but he managed to steer his shot into the side netting. Quinn saw red with a minute left when he tugged the shirt of Moffat and Winton's bad day at the office continued when another ex Ardrossan player, Colin Frye, hit a free kick that hit off a Winton defender to deflect the ball past O'Neill for an own goal.
