15 Sep 2007 - 3 towns derby win

Stagecoach Ayrshire League Sat 15th September 2007

Winton take the bragging rights from this 3 towns derby with a well earned win courtesy of a Stephen McAvoy hattrick. Winton took the lead in 5 minutes as a result of a cracking move when McAvoy and Patrick combined in midfield to set Scott Adam free on the left and as he ran on the Winton strikers followed up and Adam's cross was missed by Patrick but McAvoy was deadly with the finish to give the Rovers the early lead. Ardeer had a chance to get back into the game when Kevan Reid got on the end of some head tennis in the Winton box but he never had the power to trouble O'Neill. Ardeer passed up a gilt edged chance to equalise on 16 minutes when Davie Wilson was loose with a clearance and Tam McLelland got in one on one with O'Neill but sliced his effort high and wide. Ardeer kept pressing and on 20 minutes a couple of near things saw Graeme Patterson get a deflected shot in and from the corner former Winton man Iain Collins saw a cross clip off the top of the bar. Winton had a great chance on 23 minutes when Ally Patrick cut the ball back to McAvoy but the ball took an outrageous bobble allowing the Winton striker to miss the ball and Muir's follow up saw him sky the ball over the bar. John Gallagher was instrumental in a lot of Ardeer's good work and although Kilpatrick was adjudged offside O'Neill did pull off a good save. Just before half time Graham Muir got one on one with Paul McCann and the big keeper did well to smother the ball although the ref felt it worthy of a corner that saw the Ardeer man booked for his protests. Ardeer got back on level terms on 52 minutes when Gallagher got free on the right and cut inside and played a couple of passes through the Winton defence and Patterson ran in and scored with ease. Ardeer had started the second half on the offensive and after the goal a speculative shot just went over the bar. Winton got back into the game and Alan Shanks came close with an effort on 61 minutes. O'Neill saved well on 63 minutes from a Tam McLelland effort but as was typical of this game when a team put a few passes together the danger was there for all to see and on 65 minutes Scott Adam but a great ball inside the Ardeer defence to allow Graham Muir to cut the ball back to McAvoy who finished with some aplomb. Winton had a good chance to extend their lead on 74 minutes when a move down the right was eventually knocked across to Milliken and his shot cum shot was just missed by Shanks. Former Winton U19 player Robbie Smith was guilty of a foul on Muir on 75 minutes resulting in a penalty and McAvoy stepped up and sent McCann the wrong way to complete an impressive hattrick. The game continued with Montgomerie going close on 85 minutes with a shot from 18 yards and as Houston cross at the death almost saw McLelland steal in at the back post.
