21 Sep 2007 - Winton v the North Juniors
Have managed to have a look in the history books as to how we have got on against North Junior sides over the years. Admittedly I can only go back to the war years but our results have been mixed to say the least (well it is the Winton Rovers after all).
So starting back in 1961-62 we played Inverurie Loco Works and drew 0 - 0 before winning the replay 2 - 1 up there. Just as an aside, a couple of years later Arniston Rangers put 13 past us. In 1974, we played an Elgin side, Bishopmill United and lost 0 - 2 up there.
After that saw the Winton reach the dizzy heights of round 5 of the Scottish in 8 years from 1976 to 1984. In all that time however, the only North side we played was Fraserburgh United in 1983 when a 0 - 0 draw aparently at Winton Park (although it was supposed to be away but due to problems with Fraserburgh's pitch) saw a 7 - 1 scoreline a week later for the Rovers again at Winton Park- two games in a week for a team travelling 220 miles in each direction.
Turriff United came to Winton Park in 1987 and went home the 200 plus miles with a 1 - 0 win under their belts.
At the end of the 1980's we beat Kirkcaldy in round 1 only to face Bon Accord in the second round up there. A scoreless game at Keith Park saw the heavily backed Bon Accord side fly down to Prestwick for the replay only to gub the Winton 5 - 2.
A four year gap saw the next North side visit and this time it produced Winton's record win. 13 - 0 saw Portgordon United's fruitless visit to Ardrossan.
A visit to Aberdeen the following season saw Hermes host the Winton and we managed to defeat them 3-1. Round 2 in 1995 saw a long trip for the Rovers to visit Nairn St Ninians and this saw a 6 - 2 defeat to knock us out of the competition.
The last sides from the North we played was Deveronside in round one followed by Banks O'Dee in round 2. The Banff side were beaten 3 - 1 and in round 2 it was scoreless at Ardrossan before we bowed out 2 - 1 at Spain Park.
How will we fare against New Elgin? Difficult to say to be honest but their Scottish record against some decent sides is OK losing only 2 -0 a couple of years back away to the Talbot.
