Winton face a long and difficult trip to Aberdeen this Saturday for the replay and yet had they scored a late penalty then they'd be looking forward to the third round draw.
It was a decent day for football with calm overhead conditions but it was the visitors with their first attack of the game take an 11th minute lead. A long throw in saw the ball bounce about the penalty area and Lee Baxter rose to head the ball into space for Andrew Gregory to rifle a low shot into the corner of the net from 10 yards. Winton tried to get even and forced a series of corners but the finish wasn't there as Easton and Wilson missed chances. McAvoy forced a great save on 19 minutes from Lads' Club young goalkeeper Shaun Barney, as he parried a right foot shot past the post. Winton had tons of possession in the first half but had little to show for it and Barney was fast becoming a hero for the Aberdeen side. Winton did get parity on 36 minutes when following a corner on the right the ball came to Paul Brown and his low shot took a couple of deflections before going in at the near post. The North side had a chance before half time to go back ahead when a free kick from Reid was met by the head of Forde and the ball looped up in the air before being cleared off the line by McCann. Graham Muir forced a rare error from Barney when he spilled his shot but the on rushing McAvoy and Adam couldn't capitalise.
Winton forced the game onto Lads Club in the second half and a Milliken cross was met by Davie Wilson whose full blooded effort was saved by Barney. Graham Muir's saw a flashing header which again was held by the keeper.
Typical of the game was Winton not finding that killer touch - players were getting to the bye line but the cut back never fell kindly to any players in black and white.
Jamie Paton came agonisingly close to giving Winton the lead on 73 minutes when he burst into the Lads Club box and fired in a shot that came off the near post and the ball rolled along the goal line and came off the other post before the ball went out for a throw in. Lads Club had one final burst when Gregory got in at the back post but slid the ball into the side netting. Two minutes were left on the clock when another good burst into the box by Paton saw him fouled and the referee pointed to the spot. Mark McCann took the responsibility but man of the match Shaun Barney saved his spot kick. The drama wasn't quite over and a melee in the Lads Club box saw a couple of Winton efforts cleared off the line meaning a replay for the Ardrossan club.
