Winton came away with the three points and debut boys Graeme Patterson and John Gallagher both scored on their Winton debuts after making the switch from Ardeer. The Rovers made heavy weather against a depleted but spirited Muirkirk side who listed manager Willie McMahon as the lone substitute but the Rovers were in no mood to take pity on their opponents and played some stunning passing football in the opening seconds of this game resulting in Patterson laying the ball off for Graham Muir to hit a low strike that Gavin Hill saved. 'Kirk responded from a set piece and a header from a free kick on the left went high and wide on 6 minutes. Stephen McAvoy went direct at the Muirkirk defence on 8 minutes and forced a save from Hill that resulted in the home team defence clearing for a corner.

Winton kept up the pressure and an effort from 25 yards from Colin Frye was tipped over the bar by Hill on 10 minutes and from this corner Winton went ahead when Patterson's corner was met by the head of Paul Brown who directed his header into the top corner of the net. Winton then started to defend a bit deeper after the goal inviting Muikirk onto them.

Winton then saw a shout for a penalty turned down on 17 minutes when Adam got one on one with the keeper and as he tried to go round the keeper some contact was made but the referee decided to play on. On 25 minutes Winton had a good chance to extend their lead when Muir played in Gallagher but Hill came out to smother the ball.

Controversy reared its ugly head on 33 minutes when some miscommunication in the Winton box saw Billy Easton get a last gasp challenge in on Simpson as the home side shouted for a penalty but the ref awarded a goal kick. Winton finished the half trying to get a few shots on target from distance but there was nothing of real note to trouble the goalkeeper.

Muirkirk had to put on manager McMahon at halftime for the injured Simpson but almost from the restart Keith Stewart almost equalised as he turned inside the box and sent a shot that just went over the bar. 'Kirk opened the second half at a high tempo and really had Winton worried which wasn't helped by some really poor defending and a lack of communication. Riddell did well to create space for himself and send in a shot that forced O'Neill into a save on 50 minutes. Stewart again got a chance on 51 minutes but he couldn't find the target.

The Rovers weathered this storm and on 63 minutes they made it 2 - 0 when McAvoy went on a run down the left and he cut inside getting a decent shot on target that was blocked but John Gallagher, doing what he does best, followed up to tap the loose ball home from 6 yards out. Kris Stewart of Muirkirk had a decent curling effort on target on 76 minutes but a minute later it was 3 - 0 when Sean Quinn did well on the left to get to the bye line and cut the ball back for McAvoy who miscued and the ball came to Scott Adam who slotted it home from 6 yards.

A sharp early shot from 25 yards from David Hart on 81 minutes almost caught out O'Neill but the Winton keeper held the shot but the home side did get a goal back following a corner on 84 minutes when a corner was partially cleared and Keith Stewart fired the ball home from 8 yards. Graeme Patterson put in a good cross on full time which was met well by the head of McAvoy but the header just missed the target but the last goal of the game came from the other debut man in injury time when Quinn again showed good pace to get to the bye line to then cut the ball back to Patterson who hooked the ball home from 6 yards out.
